Dewey Decimal Classification: "DDC's numbers formed the basis of the more expressive but complex Universal Decimal Classification, which combines the basic Dewey numbers with selected punctuation marks (comma, colon, parentheses etc.). Three German men are facing weapons charges after being caught with a home-made potato gun.
The men were seen by a police patrol driving away from a lake in Kirchhain-Niederwald at speed.
Officers gave chase and stopped the men who told them they'd been trying out the potato gun in front of spectators.
The men said they'd got instructions on how to make the gun from the internet.
They'd used bits of piping and a fuse from a gas stove. They'd also used several spray cans to fire the weapon.
The men were also carrying a number of potatoes, and told officers their gun could fire potato pieces more than 300 yards.
The potato gun is classed as a firearm and none of the men had a permit to own or carry one."

In other words, each category will have its own editor or set of editors that will be responsible for the content on this category. While this solution generally provides very high quality data organization; it has two main drawbacks:
The cost of building a good directory may be prohibitive because of the labor involved;
The speed at which the directory can be updated with new data is limited by the speed at which new information can be processed. "

Our new study, Mutual Fund Costs: Risk Without Reward looks at the last ten years of mutual fund returns. The paper sheds new light on the relationship between expense ratios, turnover and performance. It illustrates even more clearly what this site has been saying all along: Low cost funds tend to have higher average returns, greater odds for superior performance, and a lower risk of inferior performance than do high cost funds.

+ Yahoo has announced that they will offer 100MB of free storage space for Yahoo Mail users.
+ Customers who pay for access to Yahoo Mail will have "virtually unlimited storage" space.
+ A "face-lift" of Yahoo Mail will debut this summer.
+ "'We will continue to lead and not follow,' said Dan Rosensweig, Yahoo's chief operating officer. 'We know where the Internet is going.'"

As of today (this new arrangement was first reported in April) all of these sites are offering search "powered by" Yahoo. Until today these sites offered search "enhanced" by Google. CNN has had an advertising deal with Overture since late 2002. Thanks to L.C. for the tip.

That's the best short description I've found on knowledge management. Information overload is a given today, yet important information is acquired regularly and needs to be made available to those who can use it. Knowledge Management addresses this problem.
Knowledge continually needs to be freshened, too. Best practices evolve. Knowledge acquired through knowledge management needs not only to be made available to individuals. It needs to be integrated into software as knowledge support as well.

The Visual Thesaurus
a Dictionary of the English Language"'The Visual Thesaurus represents the marriage of Princeton University's WordNet (an online database that organizes some 50,000 words and 40,000 phrases into synonym sets) and Plumb Design's ThinkMap software (which its creators describe as 'not primarily a data-visualization tool, but rather a data-animation tool'). The result is enchanting, if hard to describe: any word typed into the Visual Thesaurus appears onscreen like a spider bobbing at the center of a web of gently swaying gray filaments, each of which has at its end a synonym. Click on any one word at the periphery and it moves to the center of the screen, where a new web of associations emerges. (The old web, connected by the common synonym, is moved off to the side, where it is still easily accessible.) Because the display is run by a Java applet, viewers can customize the display of data: they can favor certain parts of speech, determine the extent to which synonyms of synonyms are displayed in the background, toggle between two- and three-dimensional representations of word associations, and more. The result -- as Marc Tinkler, one of the developers of the Visual Thesaurus, recently told The New York Times's CyberTimes -- is akin to 'information choreography.' " --Atlantic Monthly
