Born in San Antonio, New Mexico, he helped his father turn their house into an inn. He became a cashier in New Mexico State Bank in 1913, and was president and partner in A H Hilton and Son, General Store by 1915. He took over the family inn on the death of his father in 1918, and bought his first hotel, the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas, in 1919, building up a chain of hotels in the major cities in the USA. After World War II he formed Hilton Hotels Corporation (1946), and Hilton International (1948). He continued to expand the company until his son, Barron Hilton, took over as president in 1966. He published his autobiography, Be My Guest, in 1957. "
