The Truth About Federated Searching

Source: WebFeat (http://www.webfeat.org)

Federated searching is a hot topic that seems to be gaining traction in libraries everywhere. As with many technologies that are rapidly adopted, there are some misconceptions about what it can do. WebFeat, a provider of federated search technology to more than 900 public, academic, and corporate libraries, including more than half of the top 10 U.S. public libraries, has compiled this list of the five most commonly repeated misconceptions about federated searching. Dewey Decimal Classification: "DDC's numbers formed the basis of the more expressive but complex Universal Decimal Classification, which combines the basic Dewey numbers with selected punctuation marks (comma, colon, parentheses etc.). Despite its frequent revision, DDC is widely considered theoretically inferior to other more modern systems which make freer use of alphabetical characters to produce shorter classmarks for concepts of equal complexity, though it continues to offer a more expressive format than the simpler enumerative alphanumeric Library of Congress classification developed shortly afterward. Potato gun lands German men in stew

Three German men are facing weapons charges after being caught with a home-made potato gun.

The men were seen by a police patrol driving away from a lake in Kirchhain-Niederwald at speed.

Officers gave chase and stopped the men who told them they'd been trying out the potato gun in front of spectators.

The men said they'd got instructions on how to make the gun from the internet.

They'd used bits of piping and a fuse from a gas stove. They'd also used several spray cans to fire the weapon.

The men were also carrying a number of potatoes, and told officers their gun could fire potato pieces more than 300 yards.

The potato gun is classed as a firearm and none of the men had a permit to own or carry one."

LRRW: How to Synthesize:
"WHAT SYNTHESIS IS NOT
10. Synthesis is not a collection of case annotations or analogies. As Neumann points out, describing a series of cases is nothing but an amplified listing; 'the raw materials are held up to view but they are not sewn together.' The essence of synthesis is a search for collective meaning which can be found only a collective evaluation of the cases. "

Solutions: Teragram Taxonomy Manager: "Traditional Constraints
One difference between popular World-Wide-Web directories and directories that companies want to build is the fact that the WWW directories are usually built entirely by hand. In other words, each category will have its own editor or set of editors that will be responsible for the content on this category. While this solution generally provides very high quality data organization; it has two main drawbacks:

The cost of building a good directory may be prohibitive because of the labor involved;

The speed at which the directory can be updated with new data is limited by the speed at which new information can be processed. "

Chautauqua: "Before Monday Night Football, before talk radio, before web surfing and chat rooms, there was Chautauqua.

At the turn of the century, there were more than 10,000 Chautauqua venues in small towns and rural areas across the United States. People gathered to enjoy the famous authors of the day, the best musical ensembles, and art exhibits usually available only in major cities. After a stimulating presentation, participants wandered back to their porches and living rooms to discuss, debate, and reflect on what they had experienced together. The Chautauqua movement was all about learning in community"

COLAB - cwe: "WHAT'S IN A NAME?
... in our case, a way to convey what we do best
For years, business and government entities have strived to improve results. Traditionally, they have worked to optimize performance within vertical functional structures (silos). Today, with an increasing customer focus (citizen focus for the government) and significant technology advances, they are finding organizational 'silos' are barriers to increased effectiveness. Organizations must work across functional boundaries to see dramatic improvements in all measures of performance.

These are the silos that we 'smash.' We work with clients to break down walls that exist within and between organizations, divisions, government agencies, and companies. We bridge communication gaps, fix broken processes, and most importantly, build collaboration and consensus into our clients' cultures. By managing the 'white space on organization charts,' we help our clients operate at Peak Performance.

COLAB - cwe: " 1992, SiloSmashers was founded by Angela Drummond as Structured Solutions Inc. (SSI), a woman-owned firm. SiloSmashers was started as an entrepreneurial venture to meet a need in the marketplace for collaborative management consulting services. At that time, the Federal Government was undertaking a number of large projects related to information technology, downsizing, 'right-sizing' and restructuring, and process improvement. SiloSmashers saw the need to implement buy-in and commitment from all levels within organizations in order for these projects to succeed. SiloSmashers' first engagement, for the Department of Defense (DoD) Corporate Information Management Office, was to build and run the first DoD Center for Process Improvement.

In 1994, while still doing work with the DoD and other agencies within the Department, SiloSmashers branched off to other Federal clients. In addition, SiloSmashers began work on its methodology, originally called Rapid Action Redesign, and now updated as the Peak Performance Index. SiloSmashers also developed an internal analysis tool called ReCap, used for gap analysis.

In 1995, SiloSmashers moved to larger offices in Alexandria, VA and built an Electronic Meeting System (EMS) room to support collaborative facilitation efforts.

In 1999, SiloSmashers embarked on a branding campaign, and changed the firm's name to SiloSmashers. SiloSmashers was selected as the result of company discussions as to what we do best and the biggest benefit to our clients.

In 2000, SiloSmashers hired Charles Mudd as Chief Operating Officer (COO). In 2001, he became a Partner in the firm.

In late 2001, SiloSmashers again expanded offices and moved to our current location in Vienna, Virginia, where the firm leases on two floors of a modern office building next to the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro "

That's the best short description I've found on knowledge management. Information overload is a given today, yet important information is acquired regularly and needs to be made available to those who can use it. Knowledge Management addresses this problem.

Knowledge continually needs to be freshened, too. Best practices evolve. Knowledge acquired through knowledge management needs not only to be made available to individuals. It needs to be integrated into software as knowledge support as well.

When Islam Breaks Down

City Journal Spring 2004 | When Islam Breaks Down by Theodore Dalrymple: "

Theodore Dalrymple

My first contact with Islam was in Afghanistan. I had been through Iran overland to get there, but it was in the days of the Shah?s White Revolution, which had given rights to women and had secularized society (with the aid of a little detention, without trial, and torture). In my naive, historicist way, I assumed that secularization was an irreversible process, like the breaking of eggs: that once people had seen the glory of life without compulsory obeisance to the men of God, they would never turn back to them as the sole guides to their lives and politics." . . . The Visual Thesaurus

a Dictionary of the English Language
"'The Visual Thesaurus represents the marriage of Princeton University's WordNet (an online database that organizes some 50,000 words and 40,000 phrases into synonym sets) and Plumb Design's ThinkMap software (which its creators describe as 'not primarily a data-visualization tool, but rather a data-animation tool'). The result is enchanting, if hard to describe: any word typed into the Visual Thesaurus appears onscreen like a spider bobbing at the center of a web of gently swaying gray filaments, each of which has at its end a synonym. Click on any one word at the periphery and it moves to the center of the screen, where a new web of associations emerges. (The old web, connected by the common synonym, is moved off to the side, where it is still easily accessible.) Because the display is run by a Java applet, viewers can customize the display of data: they can favor certain parts of speech, determine the extent to which synonyms of synonyms are displayed in the background, toggle between two- and three-dimensional representations of word associations, and more. The result -- as Marc Tinkler, one of the developers of the Visual Thesaurus, recently told The New York Times's CyberTimes -- is akin to 'information choreography.' " --Atlantic Monthly

Stock Market

The pressing question now is, "Has the bottom been made?" The
market suffered a rather severe decline for several days, falling below
the March lows. Then, out of nowhere on Wednesday afternoon, a
large buying spree took place. However, there was no follow-through
on Thursday, and at this time we do not have any confirmed buy
signals. Therefore, we are still cautious, but are ready to turn bullish
if some confirmed buy signals are registered.

As noted above, prices of $SPX, $OEX, and the Dow all
penetrated below their March lows (QQQ did not). Where are the
bullish analysts who, back at the end of March, paraded across our TV
sets, "guaranteeing" that the March lows would not be revisited?
Nowhere to be seen, I can assure you -- just like their apologies. Back
to reality: the first conditions for a possible double bottom (a "W"
bottom) have been fulfilled by the market's having pulled back to
levels near the March lows. It doesn't really matter that they violated
the March lows by a small amount. Don't get me wrong: the index
charts look terrible, but if the oversold conditions that we are seeing
evolve into true buy signals, they should be able to rally -- overhead
resistance notwithstanding. The main caveat is that, should this
week's lows be penetrated on the downside, then a more severe bearish
scenario will likely unfold.

Equity-only put-call ratios continue to climb, and that means they
remain on sell signals (Figures 2 and 3). These would probably be the
last of our indicators to turn bullish, which would only occur if they
peaked and began to decline.

Volatility indices ($VIX and $VXO), however, could be one of
the first to register buy signals. Recall that a buy signal from a
volatility index occurs when volatility forms a spike peak during a
market decline. These two volatility indices did peak on Wednesday,
as $VIX rose above 20. If $VIX closes below 18, that would register
a buy signal, in our opinion. Figure 4 shows the recent action of
$VIX. However, if $VIX continues to rise, that means it would remain
in a bearish state.

Finally, let's discuss market breadth. It was downright terrible.
In fact, there still hasn't really been a strong day where
advances outnumbered declines by a wide margin. It is going to take
one of those to push market breadth to buy signals.

So, volatility indices and market breadth indicators are closest to
generating buy signals. If they do turn bullish, then the equity-only
put-call ratios should follow in due time. As these indicators turn
bullish, we would begin to take long call positions in $OEX.
However, don't rush things. Don't buy until we see some confirmed
buy signals.

newsmap

concept
Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.
Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. It's objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news, on the contrary it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.

(ARCHIVED IN: Technology in Plain English )
You may have seen the word “wiki” used to describe a website used by a group to collaborate. My intent with this post is to describe wikis and the basics of how they work- in plain English.

How to Make a Faceted Classification and Put It On the Web: "How to Make a Faceted Classification and Put It On the Web
Denton, William. 'How to Make a Faceted Classification and Put It On the Web' Nov. 2003. http://www.miskatonic.org/library/facet-web-howto.html.
This follows Putting Facets on the Web: An Annotated Bibliography, and is the second paper I wrote for Prof. Clare Beghtol of the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto, who led me in a reading course named 'Applying Faceted Classification in an Online World.' (It's also available as a PDF (215K) which is formatted for printing.)
0. Introduction
Faceted classifications are increasingly common on the World Wide Web, especially on commercial web sites (Adkisson 2003). This is not surprising--facets are a natural way of organizing things. Many web designers have probably rediscovered them independently by asking, 'What other ways would people want to view this data? What's another way to slice it?' A survey of the literature on applying facets on the web (Denton 2003) shows that librarians think it a good idea but are unsure how to do it, while the web people who are already doing it are often unaware of S.R. Ranganathan, the Classification Research Group, and the decades of history behind facets. "

Why Create a Taxonomy?

Anyone who has seen the effects of unplanned projects knows why it is important to have a plan before starting to build. Also, due to the complex nature of DAU's knowledge: teaching notes, lessons learned, magazine articles, case studies, etc. some are often confused and unable to see the value as each of these are handled individually.
Some of the basic deliverables of building aTaxonomy include:

Site Maps: Maps reflect navigation and main content buckets. They are usually constructed to look like flowcharts and show how users navigate from one section to another, whether in a database or on a website.

Content Maps: Detailed maps that show what exists on each page and how content on some pages interacts with content on other pages.

Page Schematics: Black and white line drawings or block diagrams to hand off to a visual designer. These may, or may not, reflect layout and are used mostly to inform the designer and the client exactly what information, links, content, promotional space, and navigation will be on every page of the site. Schematics also help illustrate priority.

Text-Based Outlines: Sometimes information architects want to show architecture as indented text outlines and lists.

Interactive, Semi-Functional Prototyping: In some cases, information architects are responsible for outlining or storyboarding functional prototypes, and in others they actually build prototypes with HTML, Flash, Director, or PowerPoint.

How do you build a Taxonomy?

First, it's extremely important to find out who's using it, who's building it, and what its goals are. Maybe the hardest part of information architecture is to help identify a focus or necessary component of intuitive form and function. But after focusing, evaluation is all about anticipated user paths, logical process flows, and determining how to balance efficiency with ease of use. Good, consistent information architecture will help users build relationships and trust with the technology and product

Architecture can and should be an extremely collaborative and iterative process, which evolves somewhat organically in as much structure that can be defined up-front as possible. Anything an IA can do to ask as many questions and get as many answers up-front will ultimately help the process. Architects also need to focus on who will be using the site, strategic and business goals, key usability principals, technical constraints, and future needs.

Feature Articles - Stock to Option Trading: "The Move From Stock Trading to Option Trading
Isn't a Slam Dunk
Originally published in the September issue of Stock Futures and Options magazine.
by: Price Headley

Stock option traders have always been faced with the additional work of not only correctly predicting the underlying security's price, but then also choosing the appropriate option strategy. But most stock traders mistakenly figure they can easily make the transition from stocks to options. As easy as falling off a log, right? Maybe not. There are differences that traders need to keep in mind when making the transition to options.

Stocks Don't Expire. Options Do. Plan Accordingly.

In order to make money in options on an on-going basis, a trader needs to understand the major difference between stock and option trading and that is the impact of time on stock and option positions"

Fat chance!

Weight Watchers International filed a preliminary injunction motion to try to force our client, Luigino's, to stop using Weight Watchers' trademark POINTS on the front of its Michelina's frozen dinners.
(continued)

But Judge Griesa of the Southern District of New York denied the motion, finding that Luigino's made 'fair use' of the mark and that Weight Watchers' trademark survey was entitled to no weight.

In a true Dorsey team effort, George Eck (partner/trial-NY) argued the motion, Nick Campanario (associate/trial-Minneapolis) wrote the brief, Tom Vitt (partner/IP litigation-Minneapolis) deposed the expert, and Bruce Ewing (partner/IP litigation-NY) provided advice on all fronts, particularly on Judge Griesa.
