23 Skidoo

The New York Times Store > Photographs > New York > Flatiron Building, circa 1902.

This was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1902 and heralded the Golden Era of skyscrapers in New York City. Its unusual shape accelerated winds along 23rd Street, prompting men to gather to get a peek at women’s ankles as their skirts got blown about. Police officers had to keep the crowds moving, prompting the slogan "23-skidoo."
