"'The Visual Thesaurus represents the marriage of Princeton University's WordNet (an online database that organizes some 50,000 words and 40,000 phrases into synonym sets) and Plumb Design's ThinkMap software (which its creators describe as 'not primarily a data-visualization tool, but rather a data-animation tool'). The result is enchanting, if hard to describe: any word typed into the Visual Thesaurus appears onscreen like a spider bobbing at the center of a web of gently swaying gray filaments, each of which has at its end a synonym. Stock Market

The pressing question now is, "Has the bottom been made?" The
market suffered a rather severe decline for several days, falling below
the March lows. Then, out of nowhere on Wednesday afternoon, a
large buying spree took place. However, there was no follow-through
on Thursday, and at this time we do not have any confirmed buy
signals. Therefore, we are still cautious, but are ready to turn bullish
if some confirmed buy signals are registered.

As noted above, prices of $SPX, $OEX, and the Dow all
penetrated below their March lows (QQQ did not). Where are the
bullish analysts who, back at the end of March, paraded across our TV
sets, "guaranteeing" that the March lows would not be revisited?
Nowhere to be seen, I can assure you -- just like their apologies. Back
to reality: the first conditions for a possible double bottom (a "W"
bottom) have been fulfilled by the market's having pulled back to
levels near the March lows. It doesn't really matter that they violated
the March lows by a small amount. Don't get me wrong: the index
charts look terrible, but if the oversold conditions that we are seeing
evolve into true buy signals, they should be able to rally -- overhead
resistance notwithstanding. The main caveat is that, should this
week's lows be penetrated on the downside, then a more severe bearish
scenario will likely unfold.

Equity-only put-call ratios continue to climb, and that means they
remain on sell signals (Figures 2 and 3). These would probably be the
last of our indicators to turn bullish, which would only occur if they
peaked and began to decline.

Volatility indices ($VIX and $VXO), however, could be one of
the first to register buy signals. Recall that a buy signal from a
volatility index occurs when volatility forms a spike peak during a
market decline. These two volatility indices did peak on Wednesday,
as $VIX rose above 20. If $VIX closes below 18, that would register
a buy signal, in our opinion. Figure 4 shows the recent action of
$VIX. However, if $VIX continues to rise, that means it would remain
in a bearish state.

Finally, let's discuss market breadth. It was downright terrible.
In fact, there still hasn't really been a strong day where
advances outnumbered declines by a wide margin. It is going to take
one of those to push market breadth to buy signals.

So, volatility indices and market breadth indicators are closest to
generating buy signals. If they do turn bullish, then the equity-only
put-call ratios should follow in due time. As these indicators turn
bullish, we would begin to take long call positions in $OEX.
However, don't rush things. Don't buy until we see some confirmed
buy signals.

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.
Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. It's objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. 0. Introduction
Faceted classifications are increasingly common on the World Wide Web, especially on commercial web sites (Adkisson 2003). This is not surprising--facets are a natural way of organizing things. Many web designers have probably rediscovered them independently by asking, 'What other ways would people want to view this data? What's another way to slice it?' A survey of the literature on applying facets on the web (Denton 2003) shows that librarians think it a good idea but are unsure how to do it, while the web people who are already doing it are often unaware of S.R. Ranganathan, the Classification Research Group, and the decades of history behind facets. "

Why Create a Taxonomy?

Anyone who has seen the effects of unplanned projects knows why it is important to have a plan before starting to build. Also, due to the complex nature of DAU's knowledge: teaching notes, lessons learned, magazine articles, case studies, etc. some are often confused and unable to see the value as each of these are handled individually.
Some of the basic deliverables of building aTaxonomy include:

Site Maps: Maps reflect navigation and main content buckets. They are usually constructed to look like flowcharts and show how users navigate from one section to another, whether in a database or on a website.

Content Maps: Detailed maps that show what exists on each page and how content on some pages interacts with content on other pages.

Page Schematics: Black and white line drawings or block diagrams to hand off to a visual designer. These may, or may not, reflect layout and are used mostly to inform the designer and the client exactly what information, links, content, promotional space, and navigation will be on every page of the site. Schematics also help illustrate priority.

Text-Based Outlines: Sometimes information architects want to show architecture as indented text outlines and lists.

Interactive, Semi-Functional Prototyping: In some cases, information architects are responsible for outlining or storyboarding functional prototypes, and in others they actually build prototypes with HTML, Flash, Director, or PowerPoint.

How do you build a Taxonomy?

First, it's extremely important to find out who's using it, who's building it, and what its goals are. Maybe the hardest part of information architecture is to help identify a focus or necessary component of intuitive form and function. But after focusing, evaluation is all about anticipated user paths, logical process flows, and determining how to balance efficiency with ease of use. Good, consistent information architecture will help users build relationships and trust with the technology and product

Architecture can and should be an extremely collaborative and iterative process, which evolves somewhat organically in as much structure that can be defined up-front as possible. Anything an IA can do to ask as many questions and get as many answers up-front will ultimately help the process. Architects also need to focus on who will be using the site, strategic and business goals, key usability principals, technical constraints, and future needs.
