Tempers Flare Over Hot Ticket of the Summer
Rock star Pete Townshend has branded film-maker Michael Moore a ‘bully' after a disagreement over Townshend's track Won't Get Fooled Again. Moore wanted to use the song in his latest film Fahrenheit 9/11, which looks set to become the most successful documentary film ever, taking £1.3 million in its UK opening weekend. Moore claimed that Townshend refused permission because he was a supporter of the war in Iraq, which along with the Bush administration is heavily criticised in the film.
Townshend hit back by likening Moore's behaviour to that of the US President, saying that he “bullied and slurred” him “because he didn't get what he wanted”. While admitting he supported the war when it first began, the former member of The Who said he is now “less sure we did the right thing.” He claims that he turned down the offer because he was unconvinced by Moore's work, not through any political reasoning.
Moore has encouraged people to download Fahrenheit 9/11 from the internet for free, saying, “I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world to change. The more people who see it the better". But Townshend poured scorn on the documentary makers ambitions, stating “he'll have to work very, very hard to convince me that a man with a camera is going to change the world more effectively than a man with a guitar.”
