Craig Marion on Knowledge Management
Software Design Smorgasbord: Knowledge Management Page: "Capturing best practice, harnessing collective intelligence, sharing lessons learned, and harnessing the untapped value that lies among your staff and contacts.
-- John Thackara, Director of the Netherlands Design Institute in Amsterdam
That's the best short description I've found on knowledge management. Information overload is a given today, yet important information is acquired regularly and needs to be made available to those who can use it. Knowledge Management addresses this problem.
Knowledge continually needs to be freshened, too. Best practices evolve. Knowledge acquired through knowledge management needs not only to be made available to individuals. It needs to be integrated into software as knowledge support as well.
Some of the major themes in knowledge management are
the use of groupware
intranets
organizational learning
knowledge organizations
leveraging intellectual capital
